SAMI 2020
This year's first international event of Óbuda University was held on January 23-25 on Applied Intelligence and Informatics in Herl'any near Košice, Slovakia under the name IEEE 18th World Symposium on Applied Machine Intelligence and Informatics (SAMI 2020).
The first event of the annual calendar, the SAMI conference was jointly organized by Technical University of Košice, Óbuda University, Slovak Academy of Sciences, IEEE Hungary Section and the Hungarian Fuzzy Society. Its importance and inevitable value lies in the fact that it was previously based solely on Hungarian-Slovakian relations and limited to a local event, whereas it is now recognized as an international conference supported by the Hungarian IEEE branch and the submitted articles are listed in the IEEE Xplore database increasing greatly the value, accessibility and searchability of publications.

The World Symposium on Applied Machine Intelligence and Informatics (SAMI 2020) was opened by Prof. Dr. Levente Kovács, Rector of Óbuda University, with a Conference Chair welcome speech, who highlighted the main features of the event. Initially participants arrived from only two countries but 18 years later there are now 12 countries represented. He respected the tradition of the conference series and highly appreciated the great job done by Prof. Dr. Imre J. Rudas and Prof. Dr. Ladislav Madarász, founders of SAMI. At the opening ceremony, Prof. Dr. Stanislav Kmet', Rector of Technical University of Košice, Honorary Professor of Óbuda University, underlined the role of close and active international and scientific cooperation between the two institutions and reaffirmed his support for further joint organization of the SAMI conference and suggested the inclusion of various other topics in the field. The rectors agreed that the long-term cooperation between the two universities has so far played an important role for both institutions, and is essential for international visibility, also agreed to do their utmost to maintain this good relationship.

Prof. Dr. Liberios Vokorokos, Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, Technical University of Košice, confirmed his support to Óbuda University and towards the SAMI conference series, furthermore expressed his intention to continue the collaborative research in, for example, the form of publishing in international journal called Acta Polytechnica Hungarica.

This year's conference featured renowned plenary speakers from Pázmány Péter Catholic University and SZTAKI, Prof. Dr. Gábor Szederkényi whose talk was on "Analysis and Control of Nonnegative Dynamic Models with Network Structure", as well as Dr. Cosmin Copot from the University of Antwerp, Belgium, talking about "A Graphical-oriented Appro The Programmability of a Robotic System”, finally a presentation titled “ Fuzzy Logic-based Network Intrusion Detection Systems ” by Dr. Csaba Johanyák, representing John von Neumann University, Kecskemét, Hungary.

A special section, which included seven talks on intelligent applications of informatics, was also added to the conference program, organized by Prof. Dr. László Horváth from the Doctoral School of Applied Informatics and Applied Mathematics at Óbuda University.
Beside the scientific success and value of the event, the participants were saddened to remember the ever-active, energetic, tireless Professor Baltazar Frankovič, a regular participant of the symposium, who, unfortunately, can no longer gift us his eternal optimism. In his honor, the Hungarian Fuzzy Association and Budapest Tech established the Baltazar Frankovič Young Researcher Award, which is awarded to the best article and talk by young people under the age of 35 at the annual SAMI Symposium.
This year Tímea Fülöp, MSc student at Sapientia University, received the award.
Along with Prof. Dr. Levente Kovács Rector, Dr. Radovan Hudák, Vice-Rector for International Relations at Technical University of Košice, opened the evening reception who proudly mentioned that he had received the Frankovič Award in 2010.

The professional and scientific value of the three-day event, as well as its networking and community-building role are indisputable, and the participants’ positive feedback all serve to confirm this fact.
The Tokyo University of Science has already published a press release featuring Prof. Takayuki Kawahara and his publication at the conference.
